Over the past several years, Marvel Studios has been carefully plotting out their plan for world domination in the world of on-screen entertainment. While a heavy amount of material has been generated for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and the Guardians of the Galaxy getting their own movies, Marvel have been quietly at work on the small screen to bring another band of superheroes, The Defenders, to life.
Back in April 2015, Netflix premiered the first season of Daredevil, a series about a man named Matt Murdock, living in Hell's Kitchen, New York, who is blinded by a radioactive substance and given superhuman senses as a result. Later that same year, Netflix premiered Jessica Jones, introducing a story about a former superhero who operates her own detective agency.
Fast forward to nearly a year later, and we have Luke Cage, an epic entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe about Carl Lucas, a man who fights crime with superhuman skin and unbreakable skin. Most recently, we received the "final" entry before The Defenders in the form of Iron Fist, a billionaire monk who has the ability to call upon the power of "the Iron Fist".
Much in the way that Marvel set up the first Avengers film, this shows the company following similar suit with their streaming television characters, giving us a full season or two to build out their stories before bringing them together. The first teaser trailer for the collective, The Defenders, can be viewed below. It's very short, but it's exciting to see these characters together for the first time.
It is rumored, due to the time clock that runs at the top of the teaser in the right hand corner, that the release date is "hidden" within the trailer, and will be hitting Netflix on August 18. While this hasn't been confirmed, we'll be sure to keep an eye out for any news and report back in the future.
