Mar 31 Show Review: The Regrettes Conclude U.S. Tour in Sacramento

As of late, I’ve been attending and photographing what I’m seeing to be a much wider variety of genres than I usually do. While most fall under the “rock” umbrella”, I’ve covered everything from screaming metalcore, to death metal, to the new wave of alternative rock, and even contemporary rock. Throwing a punk act into the mix is always fun, and The Regrettes are no exception to that statement. The four-piece act took the stage to close out their recent run of U.S. tour dates, in celebration of the release of their brand new album Further Joy (which is set to be released next Friday).

There was only one opening act for Monday’s show, an artist by the name of Dante Elephante, a funk rock solo artist whom I’d never heard of. While this isn’t the kind of music I usually gravitate towards, Dante Elephante was quite good, and it was nice to step out my musical comfort zone. Elephante is backed by an impeccable lineup of musicians, further enhancing each song, and the set proved to be a great warmup for our evening’s headliners.

The Regrettes took the stage around 9 PM, launching into “Come Through”, the electrifying opening track to their 2018 EP Attention Seeker. The crowd went nuts before the band launched into “Dress Up” and “California Friends”, two songs from their sophomore album How Do You Love?. A majority of the evening’s material came from the aforementioned album, along with a small selection of tracks from 2017’s Feed Your Feelings Fool! and a fun cover of Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend”.

With a new album coming out after the tour has concluded, it makes sense that there wasn’t a ton of material from Further Love, but the band did play two tracks for the crowd: “Anxieties” and “That’s What Makes Me Love You”. You could tell that the band were excited to present these new songs to the audience. Vocalist Lydia Night, soft-spoken but powerful whenever addressing the room, explained how much these new songs mean to them. A new chapter is upon The Regrettes, and if you were in attendance that evening in Sacramento, you got to see them turn the first page. I’m looking forward to seeing where the story takes them next.
